SPRAY TAN TIPS
I recommend you get your spray tan 1-2 days prior to your event.
Before your tan
Please ensure that your skin is prepped and ready for your tan. You should exfoliate and moisturise in the lead up to your tan!
If your skin is dry, the tan will not last as long and will look patchy when it comes off rather than fading gradually.
I have exfoliating gloves that you can purchase for $10.00. I have tried and tested many products and these are by far the best at taking any excess tan off without harsh effects on your skin.
Do not exfoliate on the day of your tan, as this will cause the pores to open up which will lead to nasty Brown dots on the skin that no one wants! Please focus on dry areas such as your ankles, knees and elbows.
If you are going to shave or wax prior to the tan, then please do so at least 24 hours before so that your pores have time to close to avoid the brown dots!
Plan your exercise routine around your spray tan. You will either need to exercise and shower before your spray tan, or wait until your tan has finished processing before exercising.
At your tan
Please make sure that you have no products on when I tan you. This includes NO make up, deodorant or moisturiser. These products will block the tan.
Where possible remove all jewellery for your spray tan and leave them off until your first shower.
Try to wear thongs home from your spray tan appointment to avoid boots, socks and/or stockings, which may rub off the tan solution.
I have disposable g-strings if you are concerned about getting tanned underwear. It will all come out in the wash so don't stress if they are brown when you leave. You can wear as little or as much as you like when I tan you so that you are comfortable.
Please have your hair up so that it is out of your face and not on your neck. I have disposable shower caps that you can wear to cover your hair.
Immediately after your tan
This is when you have to be the most careful with your tan because it will be so fresh. I spray the coats on you very lightly so that you will dry quickly and don't leave feeling sticky and gross.
Please bring loose dark clothing to wear straight after your tan. Anything that is tight like leggings, a bra, tight shoes and/or socks will rub the tan off causing the tan to look uneven. Even be careful with glasses or sunglasses.
Please be careful when you put your seat belt on because this may also rub the tan off. I recommend wearing a loose top that covers your chest.
If it is raining I will walk you to your car with an umbrella but please have an umbrella ready or something to cover you when you get to your final destination. If it is pouring down please please please wear clothes that cover your skin. Once that rain touches you there is nothing I can do to salvage that tan.
Water is your enemy! Please avoid sweating and the use of water until your first shower. If you happen to splash water on yourself prior to your tan (especially within 3 hours of your tan) then you may cause your skin to look blotchy.
If you are going to brush your teeth please be careful and mindful that the water doesn’t drip down your arm or that you don’t get a White rim around your mouth from the water. I would recommend using a glass of water to rinse out rather than your hands.
If you are going to sleep in your tan, please wear a long sleeve top and pants so that you don’t get the tan on your sheets and so that you don’t rub any of your tan off from skin on skin contact. If I spray tan you in the evening please ensure that your tan is dried fully before you go to bed. You may still feel slightly sticky for the first hour or two after I tan you which is completely normal. This is the time when you can cause the most damage so please be careful with your tan.
Washing off your tan
I will advise when you should wash your tan off. I have different tans that can be washed off at different times and also depending on your requirements.
Please do not use any soap in your first shower. This is because your tan will continue to develop for 24 hours from the time I tan you. It is important to not use any products on your skin such as soap and face wash. This also includes avoiding moisturiser and make up if you can avoid it.
Your first shower should be around 30 seconds in luke warm water. If you shower in hot water it may dry your skin out. The tan that I spay you in will wash off in your first shower so don’t be alarmed if there is lots of bronzed liquid washing off you.
If you need to wash your hair for the first 24 hours please do so in the sink. I know it’s annoying, but we have to do these things in order for our tan to last. If you have to do it in the shower just try and avoid getting the products on your skin.
Please pat your skin dry with a towel after your shower – don’t rub. Please continue this for the duration of your tan.
You may feel as though your tan looks a little light after you shower but please don’t panic, as the tan will continue to develop.
What to avoid
If you swim in a pool it may cause your tan to fade and or become blotchy. Chlorine acts as a bleaching agent on the skin. If you’re getting your spray tan for a beach holiday, exposing your self-tanned skin to chlorine can cause premature fading so it’s best to avoid them. And remember the tan won’t protect you from the sun so please wear sunscreen.
Avoid soaking in a bath because this will cause your tan to fade.
Please avoid any harsh soap containing SLS, soap bars and sorbelene. Acid-based products and scrubs with micro beads are especially harsh on fake tans.
How long will your tan last?
If you look after your tan, it will last anywhere from 5-10 days. This will depend on your routine as well as your skin because it regenerates itself. If you want to extend the life of your tan you can with a gradual tan moisturiser like the organic Vani-T Bronzing Custard.
Other things to consider
If you're planning your spray tan for an event and having a pedicure and/or manicure as well, I suggest you have this done before the tan. If you are having this done after your tan please tell the manicurist that you’ve just had a tan or if it’s the day after not to exfoliate and or soak your skin.
If you're going on a holiday to a tropical destination, remember that insect repellent, when sprayed directly onto the skin, can remove or fade the tan. Consider spraying your clothing or a "cloud" of spray that you can walk through instead of applying it directly to the skin. This also applies with perfume.
